Free Pizza and a Movie - "The Choice" screening with Newton RCV

This year, America's scorched earth politics escalated into a full-blown gerrymandering war. And then the Supreme Court drove the last nail into the coffin of the Voting Rights Act with their Calais decision. How can we stop this backsliding into autocracy and get to government of, by, and for the people?

Successes in local "laboratories of democracy" may hold the keys to protecting and expanding the power of voters if we can establish, spread, and scale these improvements.

Portland, Oregon's recent success story upgrading elections for all its voters is an example that can give us all hope.

In this program at the iconic West Newton Cinema, we'll:

• 7:30 PM - 8:00 PM: Discuss the movie and how Portland's new election system works
• 8:00 PM - 8:30 PM: Discuss how ranked choice voting can improve elections in Newton and ultimately, solve problems of gerrymandering, achieve fair representation, and deliver voter power nationally.

From the perspectives of candidates seeking their first election win, you'll experience how Portland changed from "Winner Take All" to "Winners for All" elections using ranked choice voting.
